Experience
I am a licensed teacher with experience teaching middle school English/reading. I am presently a freelance writer for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, an educational publishing company. While a college student, I was an English Language Assistant at the English Language Institute for international students who were improving their English skills. I conducted conversational English classes, as well as one-on-one tutoring, paper editing, and casual group classes. My international students were typically adults, but some were high school age. Most were working to improve their English skills in order to pass the TOEFL exam and continue on to earn college and graduate degrees in the U.S. From that experience, I learned how to make learning and practicing English as a second language a fun, memorable experience. In 2012 I was accepted to Teach for America, a highly selective program that admits fewer than 15% of applicants. I served as an English teacher in my placement region in North Carolina for four years before moving to the Twin Cities. Because I taught over 100 students each year, I learned how to work with any and all personalities. I learned how to adapt my teaching style to best match my students' learning styles. I learned how to approach teaching from many different angles, and how to implement helpful repetition in a way that isn't redundant. Most of all, I learned that I absolutely love the moment when the concept clicks with a student: that much coveted 'aha' moment. It's beautiful, and I strive to experience the 'aha' with my students as much as possible. I enjoy tutoring because it allows me to benefit my students with one-on-one attention and the skills I have honed after years of teaching experience. Tutoring is an especially rewarding experience after teaching large classes of 30 students each, 100+ students per year. I can get to know my students' personalities, learning styles, likes, preferences, and strengths so much better one-on-one, and that allows me to do a better job with teaching them. I look forward to tutoring you or your student!
